Don’t Believe in Luck, Believe in Your Hard Work

Because four-leaf clovers don’t do homework!

Did you ever wish something incredible would happen simply because of good fortune? I used to. In fact, I waited for luck to help me in passing a test. Do you want to hear what happened? I flunked. It was a really big lesson. But anyway, I learned one big thing since then — hard work beats luck every time.

Luck is Like a Sleepy Cat

Luck is never in a hurry. It shows up when it feels like it, not when you call it. Luck cannot be scripted. Luck cannot be part of your plan. It’s just like a cat that comes when you open a can of tuna. Will you just wait around for that? Or will you go get what you want?
When you work hard, you can control what you do. You can develop your skills. You can prepare, You can get better. That’s power.

Hard Work is Like a Superpower

Close your eyes and visualize this scenario: you want to be great at drawing. Do you really think luck will suddenly give your hand talent and direct your arm to draw like a professional? No. However, if you practice everyday (even if its only 15 minutes) you will improve. That’s not magic. It’s hard work.
Hard work gets you where you want to be. It increases your confidence. It helps you become patient. Most valuable of all, hard work always produces result — even though they can sometimes be slow.

Mistakes Are Part of the Journey

When you don your maximum effort into a task, you will undoubtedly make mistakes. That’s alright. Each mistake offers a lesson. Even the best athletes make errors. They do not stop altogether. They simply practice harder. This is what we must do as well.

Luck Can Help, But Don’t Count on It

For sure, sometimes good things just happen. For example, you find a dollar lying in the street. Or maybe your name is called for the raffle. That feels nice, but you can’t go through life waiting on good luck.
What if the raffle falls through? What if you never find another dollar? That’s why I always say to myself: “Don’t wait. Work.”

You Get What You Work For

If you want to have good grades, you have to study. If you want to run fast, you have to train. If you want to play music, you have to practice. Every great person that inspires you? They didn’t sit back and hope, they stood up and worked.
All heroes for us also work hard to train. Even professional video game players practice for countless hours to improve their abilities so that it doesn’t feel like work! It’s the same for all of us. It is not magic ladies and gentlemen! It’s just practice!

My Final Word: Luck Is Overrated

Luck is fine if you’re reading a fairy tale. In real life, your input is your secret weapon. Don’t hope for it — work for it.
So the next time someone says “Good luck!” Just smile and say “Thanks, but I’m prepared because I put in the effort.’
